Not yet ready for an electronic future
IBM has reported that its 'survey of digital democracy' in Europe has
attracted the participation of over 400 elected officials in 14 countries.
The UK, unfortunately, is notable for a poor turn-out.
This is bad news for a government that seems to daily renew its commitment
to the role of the internet in both business and education.
180 MPs have publicly listed e-mail addresses (on www.parliament.uk).
These, along with many others on the continent, were invited to participate
in IBM's survey. Only two chose to do so.
Totalling up all the other responses, IBM has found that 75% of 'e-politicians'
believe that IT could enhance democracy and 50% are in favour of online
voting, alongside traditional methods.
Public sector director Martin Goodman says that UK MPs are apparently
still not ready for the digital age. "The art of politics is good communication,
and those who embrace the best of digital democracy will have a real advantage
over those who don't," he added.
