Companies
have been warned anew that they face large fines if they do not follow
workplace health and safety regulations.
Friskies
Petcare was recently fined £600,000 for breaking workplace health and
safety laws after an employees was electrocuted while repairing machinery
at their factory at Southall.
This ruling
comes after Great Western Trains and London Underground received heavy
fines for the disregard of health and safety regulations.
Jenny Bacon,
director general of the Health and Safety Executive commented:
"These fines
show that the courts really are treating health and safety offences with
the seriousness they deserve. They are a clear message to all employers
- it is lack of safety that costs money, not managing safety properly".
These warnings
come just a few days after the latest statistics from the Health and Safety
Executive showed that UK workplaces are becoming safer. These new estimated
statistics are expected to demonstrate that tougher legislation and focused
awareness has helped the drop in figures.
