Still too much red tape, says the CBI
Four out of five British firms believe they are being held back by the
increasing demands of workplace legislation.
Details of a major CBI survey, just released, show that Working Time
regulations are causing the most problems. Many companies have already
acted on these, with the majority having introduced opt-outs for individuals
- demonstrating, the CBI says, a need for greater flexibility in implementation.
Other areas of concern highlighted in the survey are impending changes
to unfair dismissal rules and the introduction of parental leave. Enhanced
maternity leave rights and time off for family emergencies are also anticipated
with some dismay by many companies.
Director-general Adair Turner, launching the results, said: "Many firms
are worried they are spending too much of their time form-filling or clock-watching
rather than doing business."
The other side of the argument has been a consistent theme in sessions
at the TUC's annual conference.
