Jarvis has consolidated its position in the education facilities
management market with the award of a £230m schools Private Finance
Initiative contract in London and the opening of a new university accommodation
project.
The London Borough of Haringey has awarded Jarvis Projects, a subsidiary
of Jarvis plc, the PFI contract to upgrade and maintain eight secondary
schools. Jarvis will undertake the design, construction/refurbishment,
financing and management of facilities for the eight schools involved.
Around £54m will be invested over the next three years to bring
the schools up to current curricula standards and create a better learning
environment for the children. Funding is being provided by Jarvis, Barclays
Infrastructure Fund and Barclays Bank.
In addition to the construction and renovation work, Jarvis will provide
the schools with a range of facilities management services for 25 years,
giving the contract a whole life value of around £230m.
George Meehan, Leader of Haringey Council, said: "This deal benefits
everybody, particularly the children of Haringey. Working with Jarvis
will enable us to modernise these schools quickly and ensure they will
be maintained to a high standard for years to come. It also represents
good value for money."
Jarvis has now been appointed to provide improved educational facilities
for some 60,000 pupils and staff in 56 schools across the UK.
A new, privately funded hall of residence, built and financed by Jarvis
Projects through its University Partnerships Programme (UPP
see News story) has opened at the University of Reading.

Reading Student Village provides an extra 384 en-suite study bedrooms
and allows the University to accommodation to over 50% of its full-time
students, double the national standard for universities, who on average
can only offer accommodation to 20-25% of their students. The scheme was
financed by Jarvis in association with Barclays. The University of Reading
has entered into a 30-year agreement with a special purpose company established
to deliver the accommodation.
The development consists of three new buildings grouped around a landscaped
central meadow and pond area. Each building comprises a number of six-bedroom
self-contained flats with communal kitchen/dining facilities. UPP has
also refurbished an existing 18th century farmhouse on the site.
Professor Roger Williams, Vice Chancellor of Reading University, said,
"We had been taking a sound but traditional approach to our accommodation
in Reading. However, the development of Reading Student Village in partnership
with Jarvis means that we have now evolved a model of how the private
and public sectors can work together effectively. I would not hesitate
to draw to the attention of other higher education institutions developing
their student accommodation the benefits of this type of partnering arrangement."
