The Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) project, part
of Jarvis University Partnership Programme (UPP), has reached financial
close. The development, valued at £22m with a whole life cost of
£74m, will include the provision of a 600-bedroom residence.
The project was selected as a PFI/PPP Pathfinder by the Higher Education
Funding Council for England and the council provided support to the College
while the deal was negotiated. Jarvis was appointed preferred bidder at
the end of July.
The building is to include 320 undergraduate rooms, 280 larger study bedrooms
with small kitchenettes, communal lounge, laundrettes, vending machines
and 14 guest flats for visiting tutors, guests and dignitaries of the
College.
Lifelong learning minister Malcolm Wicks commented on the partnership:
"The government is keen to encourage innovative investments which
provide students with high quality facilities, as well as offering value
for money."
Chief Executive of Jarvis accommodation services Henry Latterty said:
"This appointment significantly strengthens Jarvis UPPs presence
in the Manchester area where we are now providing over 1,500 rooms to
students looking for secure, comfortable accommodation."
Professor Edward Gregson, principal of the RNCM believes the development
will provide the students with an environment that will enable them to
get the best from their studies. Gregson also says it will help attract
the most talented musicians.
