University accommodation provider UNITE has been selected
as preferred bidder for a £20m PFI design and build project for
the University of Northumbria, in which UNITE will build 337 off-campus
study bedrooms in self-contained flats.
The scheme is expected to be completed in September next year and includes
30 years of building maintenance.
The accommodation will be developed on a brownfield site at Camden Street,
Newcastle, adjacent to the university - a property previously owned
by North Eastern Electricity Board.
UNITE chief executive Nick Porter said: "This is a significant
milestone in our nationwide growth and we look forward to developing
new accommodation services and delivering them in partnership with the
University of Northumbria."
Earlier this month, UNITE was named preferred bidder to build and manage
the £44m student accommodation at Portsmouth University (see
News story).
