The construction of the first bridge across the Thames in
over a century is described as "a dream come true."
Londons Millennium Bridge opens to the public tomorrow.
Speaking
at a press conference ahead of the official opening of the footbridge
at noon on Saturday, Simon Jenkins of the Millennium Commission described
the project as "a dream come true." He added: "We set out
to do something for London, we envisaged the bridge as a vital part of
the south bank regeneration scheme and the Tate Modern project."
The project, originally conceived by David Bell of Pearson plc, is the
result of collaboration between architects Foster and Partners, Sir Anthony
Caro and Ove Arup and Partners. The bridge, which has required the co-operation
of the Corporation of London and Southwark council, is intended to bring
together the communities of the north and south banks of the river.
