European internet infrastructure and services provider TeleCity
has opened Ireland's first world-class internet data centre or 'carrier
hotel' facility in the Citywest Digital Park on the western edge
of Dublin. Internet data centres provide a managed-facility peering
point where telecommunications companies, internet service providers
(ISPs) and e-commerce companies can safely locate high-tech equipment
so that their networks can efficiently interlink, switch and exchange
data. TeleCity will provide the first connection point for telcos
and ISPs to the Global Crossing network in Ireland from next month.

The new facility continues the expansion plans of TeleCity which began
trading in April 1998 and floated on the London Stock Exchange last month
raising £116 million. The company already has six TeleCity Internet
Exchanges, or TIXs, in Europe, providing co-location, systems engineering
and additional services to a range of internet and telecommunications
businesses. Customers include: LINX (London Internet Exchange), SCOTiX
(Scottish Internet Exchange), UUNET, COLT, ntl and Cable & Wireless.
The Dublin site joins London (2), Edinburgh, Manchester, Amsterdam and
Stockholm. TeleCity expects to have 12 TIXs operational by the end of
this year. Dr. Mike Kelly, Managing Director at TeleCity, said: "
We are progressing our plans to provide gateways for Internet traffic
across the main cities of Europe, including Paris, Munich and Frankfurt."
The agreement was signed in conjunction with The Department of
Public Enterprise and the Industrial Development Agency (IDA). Commenting
on the agreement, Mary O'Rourke TD, the Minister for Public Enterprise
declared: "I am delighted to open Ireland's first world-class
'telehouse'. TeleCity has a proven record as one of Europe's most
successful telecommunications facilities management companies. This
represents a major development in the communications and e-commerce
sectors in Ireland and will further enhance Ireland's attractiveness
as a location for internet and high-end e-commerce ventures."
