Skanska awarded London’s largest construction project

Zurich-based reinsurer Swiss Reinsurance Company (Swiss Re), has awarded Skanska’s British subsidiary, Skanska Construction, the SEK 1.8bn (£130m) contract to construct the company’s new offices in London.

Work on the new 40-storey building, designed by architect Lord Norman Foster, starts immediately and is scheduled for completion during the latter part of 2003. The entirely glass-clad, round and pointed building will be 179 m high, comparable in height to Tower 42 (previously known as the Nat West Tower).

The contract follows Swiss Re’s acquisition of the Baltic Exchange site at St. Mary Axe in the City. Last year, the Baltic Exchange supported the legal challenge being mounted by SAVE Britain’s Heritage to prevent the demolition of the Grade II listed former Exchange.
