Another step towards the wireless revolution
Ericsson and Microsoft have announced a collaboration aimed at developing
the next generation of mobile phone. It will be designed to provide 'end-to-end
solutions' for wireless internet access.
The two companies are convinced that wireless is the way of the future.
Amongst other benefits, they point to the ability to access e-mail and
receive news updates.
Ericsson will incorporate Microsoft's 'mobile explorer' into its new
products. These will also feature Bluetooth technology. Bluetooth is the
accepted industry standard for low voltage radio contact between electronic
equipment. It is rapidly being built into a whole range of products that
should begin to be available next year.
Ericsson is also a partner in the development of the 'Epoc' operating
system, designed by Psion and intended to be rolled out for mobile phones.
The Swedish company says it is still committed to that plan, but Psion
might be forgiven for wondering about the size of that commitment.
