Unions sound dual alarm
An annual survey by the TUC has found that unions are handling record
numbers of stress compensation claims. In 1998, case numbers were up 70%
over the previous year.
Two causes are suggested. First, work-related illness is a real problem
in some sectors and there is a generally greater awareness of that fact.
Second, a few highly publicised settlements may have encouraged more
complaints. Many employers would prefer not to see such an issue settled
in public, however, and as a result, private settlements are not uncommon.
The TUC has also expressed concern about continuing workplace racism,
suggesting that employers should monitor the ethnic mix of their workforces.
As one part of its evidence, it points to unemployment figures that
are substantially higher for ethnic minorities than for white groups,
especially in London, the West Midlands and Greater Manchester - all areas
of high ethnic population.
