A new voice for those who purchase construction was launched
yesterday at the Royal Institution. The Confederation of Construction
Clients will represent the interests of all clients regardless of volume,
value or frequency of construction activity.
The new body builds on the foundations of the Construction Clients
Forum and aims to play a leading role in realising the agenda set by the
influential Rethinking Construction report (July 1998) which
called for the adoption of new working practices focusing on the delivery
of greater quality and efficiency within construction programmes.
The Confederation of Construction Clients aims to represent the interests
of construction clients collectively by: encouraging clients to achieve
value for money through best practice; securing major measurable and consistent
improvement in performance across the industry; promoting policies aimed
at achieving a safe, stable and skilled industry which is competitive
and competent.
The CCCs Supervisory Board currently includes representatives of
BAA plc; Buckinghamshire County Council; Defence Estates; Highways Agency;
London Borough of Tower Hamlets; McDonalds Restaurants; NHS Estates;
Office of Government Commerce; Railtrack plc; St Helens Metropolitan Council;
and the University of Surrey.
Mike Roberts, BAAs Group Technical Director and Chairman of the
newly constituted CCC, said: The formation of a powerful confederation
of individual purchasing clients is a significant milestone in the progress
towards affecting improvement in the construction industrys performance,
with clients and suppliers reaping the benefits.
By establishing a single, all-embracing voice for purchasing clients
we will have the commitment and, crucially, the capability to make things
happen. The CCC has a clear agenda: the emphasis will be on providing
our client members and the industry at large with insight and support
designed to achieve specific best practice objectives. I look forward
to welcoming industry clients, irrespective of their size and purchasing
frequency, into the Confederation.
