Health & safety gets extra £45m

The Health and Safety Commission is to get an extra £45 million to continue its drive to cut work-related accidents and illness.

The money, to be made available over three years, will allow the Commission to carry forward the Government’s strategy to cut deaths, injuries and illness caused by work by up to 30% over the next 10 years. The Health and Safety Executive will also be able to meet its new commitments following the recent transfer of railway safety case assessments from Railtrack.

The package of £45m is part of the Chancellor’s three year Spending
Review. It builds on the investment made in the 1998 Comprehensive Spending Review, which provided an extra £63 million between 1999 and 2001.
