CIRIA launched new guidance on the design and implementation of Environmental
Management Systems within companies yesterday, Sustainability Day of National
Construction Week.
Environmental management in construction has been compiled to provide
practical assistance to companies in the construction sector who want
to tackle environmental management issues.
The new guidance brings together a step-by-step guide on how to get started
in environmental management, together with advice on implementing more
advanced techniques (such as developing integrated management systems),
environmental supply chain management and using environmental management
techniques to improve stakeholder dialogue.
A key feature of the guidance is the inclusion of case studies from a
variety of companies in the construction sector who have practical experience
in implementing environmental management systems, such as Carillion, BAA
and AMEC.
Peter Bransby, Director General at CIRIA, commented: "Construction
companies are realising that relationships with clients, regulators, the
public and suppliers can be improved with effective and more sustainable
practices. Business benefits include greater resource efficiency and cost
savings, increased shareholder and brand value, and better risk and liability
management."
