Amec has won the title of 'Large Consultancy of the Year' in the 1999 Building Services Awards. At an event sponsored by air conditioning supplier Daikin on June 28 at the Grosvenor Hotel, London, Amec beat stiff competition from WSP Group, Gibb and last year's winner, Hoare Lea & Partners. The panel of judges included Alec Moir, ex-chairman of Oscar Faber, Andrew Warren, director of the Association for the Conservation of Energy, and Robert Higgs, director of the Heating and Ventilation Contractors Association.

Dudley Bower FM has been appointed to run FM for C&A throughout its stores in the UK and Ireland. DBFM will provide management and technical support for the maintenance of C&A's retail and distribution outlets including air conditioning and heating, security systems, lighting, planned maintenance and building fabric.

Comax has recruited a Senior Defence Advisor to help deepen its understanding of defence sector needs now and in the future. Major General John Stokoe joins Comax after having gained FM experience as deputy chief of staff, land command and ultimately as deputy commander in chief.

Johnson Controls has been awarded a three year contract to provide FM services to 12 Southern Sun hotels in South Africa which, it claims, is the first such contract by a major hotel group anywhere in the world. The hotels are located in Kimberley, Blomfontain, Vanderbijipark, Johannesburg, Sandton, Pretoria and Petersburg. Johnson Controls will provide building and fabric maintenance, pools and gardens maintenance, M&E services, H&S compliance, plant and machinery and energy management.

Select Facilities Services has signalled its plans to get involved in PFI projects by appointing Alan Hammond as PFI Manager, heading a team specifically looking at developing and tendering for PFI projects.

Eurest has extended its staff catering and hospitality services contract at Centrica to a further 19 locations in a new three year contract with Amey Business Services. It was originally supplying nine locations. This extension means that it will provide catering to over 13,000 Centrica staff at 26 restaurants, as well as hospitality services at locations across the country.
