Racism
still rife in the workplace
Racism has
increased dramatically in the workplace over the past two years, according
to a report from the Commission for Racial Equality (CRE).
The CRE reports
that it has received 225 complaints from minority employees based in banks,
law firms and private finance sectors, between January and June alone.
This is more than double the number for the same period in 1997.
The Commission
says that many employees are refused promotion because of their race and
notes that there are still remarkably few minority people at boardroom
level. A scheme set up by the Commission two years ago to combat racism
in companies has achieved disappointing results.
Sir Herman
Ouseley, CRE chairman said: "We can only impose requirements on employers
where we have evidence, have carried out an investigation and shown that
they are discriminating. However, we can't force any employer to do something
providing they are complying with the law."
